SOCIAL AUXILIARY WORKER
Description
Health Systems Trust (HST) wishes to appoint Social Auxiliary Worker for the National Department of Health Global Fund Tuberculosis (TB) Project in eThekwini district. The Social Auxiliary Workers will be responsible for providing social support services to TB patients in need, and the incumbents should have a good understanding of the Department of Social Development (DSD) legislative mandates, policies and programmes, the Batho Pele principles, and knowledge of the social services network at district level. This is a fixed-term contract position, renewable based on continuation of funding and performance.
Key Responsibilities
• Develop a sub-district workplan with clear roles and timeframes. • Provide assistance and support to Social Workers for rendering of a social work service with regard to the care, support, protection and development of vulnerable individuals, groups, families and communities. • Assist Social Workers to attend to any other matters that could result in or stem from social instability in any form. • Perform administrative support functions in support of Social Workers as required. • Assess the TB patients’ needs, situations, strengths and support networks to determine treatment goals and appropriate interventions. • Ensuring that all patient files, and other records comply with relevant policies, regulations and procedures. • Make recommendations on the best course of action for a patient and/or family. • Monitor referrals to ensure that TB patients access the services or support to which they have been referred. • Provide progress reports in sub-district meetings. • Report daily or weekly to the district-level Sub-recipient Supervisor, or in line with the organisation’s policies and procedure. • Submit monthly activity reports per the workplan to the district-level Sub-recipient Supervisor and Sub-district TB/HAST Manager.
Key Attributes
• Excellent understanding of the Social Assistance Act, and of relevant policies and guidelines • Sound knowledge of the Public Service Act and the Batho Pele Principles • A basic understanding of human behaviour, the relationship system and social systems. • Basic knowledge of financial matters related to social auxiliary work • Good analytical and problem-solving skills • Good communication skills (both interpersonal and written) • Good Information Technology skills and understanding of existing information systems used in Social Services • Flexibility and ability to adapt to changes • Conflict resolution skills • Good co-ordination skills • Sound skills in information and knowledge management (keeping precise records and compiling accurate reports)

Qualification Required
• A Grade 10 Certificate plus completion of the learnership to enable registration with the South African Council for Social Service Professions (SACSSP) as a Social Auxiliary Worker • Current registration with the SACSSP as a Social Auxiliary Worker
Experience Required
• At least three years’ experience of working as a Social Worker in the public sector • Experience in administration and management
Remuneration
The salary package for this position based on Global Fund requirements is R222,703.00 to R 295,143.60 as the Total Cost to Company.
