REGISTERED NURSE MENTOR (EVT)
Description
The Health Systems Trust (HST) wishes to appoint a Registered Nurse Mentor (EVT) (Professional Nurse) for a health systems strengthening Global Fund project to support the maternal, child and women’s health (MCWH) programme in eThekwini District. The Registered Nurse Mentor will provide onsite clinical and programme mentorship, training and technical support to facility staff, with a focus on strengthening VTP and MCWH-related services, improving staff competency, supporting quality improvement, and using facility performance data to identify and address service-delivery gaps. This is a fixed-term contract position, renewable based on the continuation of funding and performance.
Key Responsibilities
Mentorship and Capacity Building • Conduct routine onsite mentorship and support visits to assigned facilities. • Assess staff capacity, identify service delivery gaps and provide appropriate mentorship and coaching. • Strengthen the quality and integration of clinical and programme services within supported facilities. • Provide technical guidance on relevant clinical standards, policies, guidelines and programme requirements. • Support the implementation of quality improvement initiatives and evidence-based practices. • Monitor progress on identified gaps and provide appropriate follow-up and support to address challenges. • Collaborate with facility and programme teams to strengthen service delivery, staff performance and programme outcomes. Performance Monitoring and Reporting • Review monthly and quarterly facility performance, and intervene on gaps identified. • Collaborate with M&E Officers and data teams to interrogate and verify facility data. • Use performance and data-quality findings to identify mentorship, training and quality-improvement priorities. • Track progress and follow up on implementation of agreed improvement actions. • Discuss significant data or performance concerns with facility teams, the data team and line manager early. • Compile and submit accurate monthly mentorship and programme reports to the line manager. • Maintain appropriate records of facility visits, mentorship activities, training sessions, identified gaps, action plans and follow-up actions. • Contribute information and evidence required for programme reporting and performance reviews. Leadership and Stakeholder Engagement • Conduct monthly meetings, or meetings as required, with facility staff to review progress, discuss challenges and agree on actions to optimise integrated service delivery. • Coordinate mentorship activities with facility managers, professional nurses, district programme teams, M&E/data teams and other relevant stakeholders. • Participate in relevant district meetings and engagements, including MCWH, HAST, Operation Phutuma Nerve Centres, QIP and Global Alliance initiatives, as applicable. • Promote teamwork, accountability, continuous learning and effective integration of relevant programme components. Professional Conduct • Maintain professional nursing standards and work within the applicable scope of practice, policies and guidelines. • Demonstrate professional integrity, respect, confidentiality and accountability when mentoring facility staff. • Promote a supportive learning environment that encourages staff development, reflective practice and continuous improvement.
Key Attributes
• Good understanding of, and experience in using, one of the following NDoH information management systems: District Health Information System (DHIS), Tier.Net or Electronic Drug Resistance Register (EDRWeb) would be an added advantage. • Proficiency in Microsoft Packages. • Proficiency in verbal and written communication skills.

Qualification Required
• Basic Qualification in Nursing. Four-year Diploma or a Nursing Degree (Midwifery is essential). • Post-basic qualification in Nursing Education. • Training in NIMART and PMTCT, Integrated Management of Childhood Illness (IMCI), SRH, Adult Primary Care (APC) and PrEP mentorship. • Annual practising certificates from SANC.
Experience Required
• At least five years’ experience as a professional nurse in primary health care, HIV, TB or MCH. • At least three years’ experience in mentorship and staff management. • Demonstrated experience in training and capacity-building in the HIV and MCWH fields. • A valid driver’s licence is essential.
Remuneration
The salary package for this position is R695,917.00 to R713,167.20 Total Cost to Company (CTC), based on Global Fund requirements.
